Western Cape MEC of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde on Monday handed over a petition to Parliament to suspend the new immigration regulations.

MEC Winde said the new regulations will harm the tourism sector.

The new regulations which will come into effect on the 1st of October state that parents need an unabridged birth certificate to leave the country with a child and when the child is travelling with one parent or a non-parent an affidavit from both parents is required.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronwynne Jooste said it is not only the tourism industry that will be affected. These regulations will impact on every sector of our economy, including in film, business process outsourcing, visits for medical purposes and volunteerism.

“It is also now much harder for foreign nationals to enter the country to conduct business here. In a country where the national unemployment rate is climbing, we simply cannot afford laws that will result in job losses Jooste added.
