The protest last week at the Umyezo Wama Apile combined school in Grabouw in the Western Cape has led to the school being closed.

MEC for Education Donald Grant said that the situation at the school has made it impossible for normal teaching and learning to take place.

The trouble started when members of the Elgin Grabouw Civic Organisation barged into the school to demand the building of a new school.

Some facilities were set alight and a number of people arrested for public violence.

Grant further said the department did not take the decision of closing the school lightly.

Grant added that closing the school is essential as to protected teachers and learners from violence.
