South African President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on its success so far in bringing the 33 trapped miners in Chile to the surface after 69 days.

Seventeen miners have been rescued so far.

A message of support has been sent to Chile on Wednesday from the South African president.

Spokesperson of the Presidency Zizi Kodwa said “the safety operation which began this morning has brought more that 10 people to the surface.”

He says it is indeed a great break through with the use of modern technology.

“We are happy that one of our South African engineering companies Murray & Roberts are also participating and therefore it gives hope to SA with a huge mining industry that we are ready as a country should we encounter such a situation,” Seshoka said.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has also congratulated Chile in their rescue efforts to bring the men to safety.

NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka has said that “SA played a significant role in this rescue operation but they should demonstrate to us mining houses how this capability should be used to minimize the number of people who continuously die in the mining industry.”
