A seventy-four-year-old man from Gugulethu was shot in his stomach during an attempted armed robbery at the community centre in NY126 this morning.

At approximately 7:10AM, four armed men allegedly approached the centre and fired several shots at the centre’s four security guards who were standing close to the community centre’s entrance. The security guards returned fire and the suspects fled on foot towards a nearby garage where they fired shots at three police officers.

The police returned fire but the suspects scattered between the houses and are still at large. A black Volkswagen Golf that had been parked at the community centre, and is suspected to be the getaway vehicle, sped away from the scene. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in NY 111 in Gugulethu, it was reported stolen in August this year from Goodwood. A pistol with the serial number scraped off was also found near the flats in NY 112.

Police are investigating cases of attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and motor vehicle theft.

Anyone with information that may assist the police is asked to contact crime-stop on 08600-10-111.
